Homeschooling through Illness

By Heart of Wisdom Academy - Wednesday, February 20, 2013

  • Kaden was very brave this month, when we had surgery to repair his circumcision. The surgery was quick and uncomplicated and recovery has been terrific! We're praising God!

How do we homeschool through illness?

Our family has homeschooled under less than optimal conditions. We have schooled through major and minor illnesses as well as numerous surgeries. Here's what I do?
  • Focus more on Spanish, typing practice, typing games, math fact practice (can be done independently)
  •  More computer based learning (abcmouse.com, starfall, fun4thebrain.com, pbskids.org. Time for Learning (we used this for a few months during extended serious illness)
  • Netflix (documentaries)
  • Educational coloring pages
  • Books on tape free through Librivox or Library
  • Educational DVD's. The last few week's we've been watching Colonial House
  • Reading (Kyle)
  • Electives (oragami, Karate DVD's, etc.)
  • In some cases, like this one, the surgery was planned; so I caught up on housework, laundry, and shopping ahead of time
  • Food is very low maintence (sandwhiches, soups, chicken nuggets, etc)
  • Most illnesses are unplanned in which case I do the best I can.
