Week in Review 17, 2013

By Heart of Wisdom Academy - Monday, February 04, 2013

The twins continue with speech therapy twice a week for
  • receptive-expressive language disorder
  • articulation disorder (Kaden only)
  • reading disorder
  • written language disorder
  • working memory impairment
  • abnormal auditory perception/phonemic processing delay (Peyton only)
Recently did a Plan of Care Update for Kaden. He has met many goals. Overall he is progressing well. He is retaining and mastering what he is learning. He is working hard, and to the best of his ability.

Peyton has shown a lot of improvement in comprehension. She still reads and writes at a beginning Kindergarten level. Math skills are at a beginning Kindergarten level. Doesn't comprehend abstract concepts at all; but is improving with concrete concepts such as basic addition. Number reversals of 2,3,5,7, and 9 are constant. Numbers with 2 digits are often written inversely. Phonemic awareness skills are still extremely weak. Working memory problems are a significant hurdle. Still reversing "u" for "e" and vice versa for reading and writing. Still confuses "f" for "th" in reading, writing, and speaking. Is starting to understand the concept of "after". Still unable to understand the concept "before". Not using prepositions on her own, but if I say, "put a star under the table", she can do it. She can say all her letters, sounds, digraphs, and her 3 welded sounds; she can say, and write these. Remains positive about her school lessons. Is becoming more aware and more discouraged that she can't read in comparison to the other children in class at church and homeschool-co-op. She works hard, too hard, and has little return for all her effort. I'm teaching her to pray for contentment and peace right now. The goal is to be a hard worker and as long as she does that, we should both be satisfied. I am purchasing the Brain Integration Manual and plan on beginning that in the next couple of months with her.
  • I have Horizons Math K at home, so we picked that up this week. They both enjoyed having color for a change, since we usually do Math U See. Think we'll continue slowly with Horizons
  • Kyle and I started the City of Ember Trilogy and Gregor the Overlander Series. We both have really gotten into the City of Ember. I picked Gregor the Overlander because I was so enthralled with The Hunger Games Trilogy that I wanted to read everything by the author. So far, I'm unimpressed, but we're only 2 chapters in. I'll let you know if anything changes.
  • Kyle is learning how to use outlines to create compositions
  • I listened to some seminars by Andrew Pudewa from the Institute of Excellence in Writing. I was very impressed with
