This week I learned how to use textbooks as a tool. I realized that although I love living books and the Charlotte Mason approach to education, textbooks can have a place in my school if they help us. We don't have to do every single lesson and every single page. It's not necessary for most children. I can pick the specific skill or drill that needs to be worked on and just do that. This week, I mastered the textbook, and I didn't let it master us. Kyle did Reading Comphrenesion work from Grade 6 Curriculum of Basic Skills because he needed it. I used it because I had it, there's nothing magical about this particular book. We also used Rod and Staff's fifth grade reader, A Time to Plant.
