By Heart of Wisdom Academy - Sunday, February 03, 2013

  • This week while Kaden was chewing a straw, a piece of it broke off and got stuck in  his tonsil. Here he is in the ER holding the evidence.
  • Kaden worked on the last few stories in Fun with Pets, an Abeka first grade reader.
  • Kaden read words with long vowel sounds
  • Peyton, Kaden, and Kendal all worked on Bob Books
  • Twins worked on working memory practice daily
  • Math: continued patterns, addition, place value, and skip counting
  • All younger kids continue with ABCmouse.com, free reading, and read-alouds
  • Kyle did living math with ratio's, fractions, and percents.
  • He continued rocket math additions and Word Problems with Fractions
  • New for Kyle we worked on reading comprehension using various readers.
This week I learned how to use textbooks as a tool. I realized that although I love living books and the Charlotte Mason approach to education, textbooks can have a place in my school if they help us. We don't have to do every single lesson and every single page. It's not necessary for most children. I can pick the specific skill or drill that needs to be worked on and just do that. This week, I mastered the textbook, and I didn't let it master us. Kyle did Reading Comphrenesion work from Grade 6 Curriculum of Basic Skills because he needed it. I used it because I had it, there's nothing magical about this particular book. We also used Rod and Staff's fifth grade reader, A Time to Plant
