What Is Normal Anyway?

Having a child with special needs might just be the most intimidating part of homeschooling a child. We have been led to believe that only experts can solve the problems of children who are different than the “norm.”

What is normal, anyway? Who gets to decide?

According to the public school system, normal means happily sitting in a desk all day while teachers tell you what you need to know. Normal means not getting fidgety, writing neatly (using the handwriting style decided by your state education agency), using curriculum that was also chosen by your state agency. Normal means playing for 15 minutes, twice a day. Normal means learning times tables by 3rd grade, and state history by 5th. Normal means checking off a list of accomplishments by age 18 and meeting the arbitrary standards set by your state (and sometimes federal) agency.

Normal means having “experts” tell you what your kids need, instead of being able to discern for yourself.

If your child does not fit into this “normal,” they are given labels with all combinations of the alphabet. They are termed “special” and moved to different classrooms away from their “normal” peers. They are stigmatized. They are recommended for special therapies and drugs.

But YOU can give them something different, and it's not as hard as you think.
