All week, my social feeds have thrown so much ugliness in front of my eyes: ugliness gushing out of the public school system.
A Kentucky school principal threw a high school boys’ drag show in the gym. These were teen boys in women’s lingerie.
A Florida school took elementary kids on a field trip to a gay bar.
A Georgia school assigned 3rd graders a paper on eating babies.
A high school boy was crowned homecoming queen.
A Texas school scrambled to remove actual porn from the library. (You should research what concerned moms are finding in school libraries, but only if you can deal with never un-seeing some things.)
A teacher commented in a group about her school’s transgender training (for staff and students) that she’s not allowed to tell parents about.
And yet, every day, homeschool moms beat themselves up about not measuring up. They’re afraid they will ruin their kids. They think their curriculum isn’t rigorous enough, or that they will get behind.
Mamas, keep on giving your kids a childhood. Keep up the storytime. Keep singing with them. Keep encouraging their strengths and being patient with their weaknesses.
Because whatever you’re doing in your homeschool is a thousand times more valuable than the twisted assignments that are taking the place of real academics in the buildings they call school.
