The End of Semester 1 Review
Family Devotions:
We studied Proverbs verse by verse, using this commentary. The children had daily personal devotions. We did not do scripture memory all semester. Our goal last semester was to memorize Matthew 18. We got half way through, so second semester, I would like to pick that up again and finish memorizing it. Dad does evening devotions when he's home, otherwise I read the Bible or devotion books. And then we just have normal, rich, vibrant, Christ-centered conversations amid the thousands of teachable moments God presents in our lives daily.
Spanish:
Kyle continued Rosetta Stone Level 1 and Duolingo. Kaden, Peyton, and Kason all worked on Rosetta Stone. Progress was made.
Geography:
We are memorizing the names and locations of all the countries in the world this year. This semester we completed all the countries in North America, South America, Central America and started Africa. We are also memorizing the names and locations of the 50 United States. They completed the states of the Southern Border, Northern Border, and Eastern Border. Next Semester finish the middle states.
Math:
Math went beautifully this term. All the younger kids completed about a lesson a day in Horizons Math. Kyle has done great working on IXL Math. He worked on Geometry and Algebra skills. Next semester we will continue...I ordered Real World Algebra, Painless Algebra, and Algebra Survival Guide: A Conversational Guide for the Thoroughly Befuddled to supplement his studies. I also am going to have him do Times Tales.
Learning to Read:
Peyton, Kason, and Kendal are my beginning readers...all at various stages in the reading process. Peyton is 9 she is on a first grade reading level. She finished Wilson Student Reader 1 and is nearly done with Wilson Student Reader 2. Fluency is difficult. Spelling is nearly impossible. Reading continues to be a laborious exercise for her. Although she is able to read some Bob books and some Dr. Seuss books. Her memory is better than it has been in the past. She still has significant letter reversals and regularly has trouble with reading and spelling certain sounds. Kason and Kendal are progressing well. Kaden is beginning chapter books and he is in Wilson Book 5. Kyle read dozens and dozens and dozens of novels this semester not including his assigned reading, which you can find if you click on Our Curriculum Tab.
Classical Conversations:
We are doing Classical Conversations Foundations at home. We really enjoyed the history and science sentences. We are almost done with the first 12 weeks of that. We never got to the timeline. I plan to implement timeline for second and third semesters. The memory sentences have really added a depth and richness to our history and science studies.
Writing:
Kyle did a weekly current event and worked on IEW. Next semester I want to only focus on IEW.
Other:
Kyle began IXL Language Arts this semester. Kaden will begin next semester. Kaden completed typing, he'll continue practing. Peyton is nearly done with typing. Kyle completed typing long ago, but continues practicing and taking free online typing tests. We didn't do much coding this semester; no one was very interested. We have memorized 2/3 of the Presidents!! Next semester we will be done.We are taking all week off for Thanksgiving break!! Then we'll work for 3 weeks, and take another 2 weeks off for Christmas!!
