Week in Review 19-Writing Composition

By Heart of Wisdom Academy - Thursday, February 02, 2012

The most common fear among homeschool moms is that we're going to forget to teach something. It happens. The goal is to teach the children how to learn and they can then teach themselves to learn anything they want. I haven't been teaching writing composition. I thought that you learn it by learning grammar. I was wrong. You definitely don't learn writing composition by learning grammar and writing mechanics. Both of which I have been heavily teaching for years.

In the activity above, I copied a paragraph out of Write Away. I gave him the papers out of order and had him order the paragraph. Then for the rest of the week, he had to use the paragraph as a model for his own writing. He could change nouns and verbs and that's it. A popular, and from what I've heard, the best writing program is from Institute in Excellent of Writing. It's pricey at about $169.00, although I've heard that you could by the manual and skip the DVD's of you are a confident writer. Well I read a review of the program which said that Benjamin Franklin learned to write by taking an author's work, outlining it, setting it aside, and writing his own piece based on that format. That is the approach this program takes and that is something that I can implement in my homeschool.

Kaden transitioned to reading words the "real way", "big-boy way", whatever way you want to call it!!!! In 100EZ he switched from the funny orthography to regular orthography!!!Whoooo Hoooo

Peyton learned to ride a bike today!!!!!! She really persevered this week, setting out to learn it and she did.
